Puerto Varas, CHILE – Leading journalists specialized in Patagonia have come together in Patagon Journal, a new, international magazine in print and digital about nature, culture, travel and outdoors whose mission is to “build a greater appreciation, understanding and environmental stewardship of Patagonia.”
The Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina is a global conservation priority and a major destination for ecotourism, adventure travel and outdoors sports. Patagon Journal will both showcase the region as well as contribute to protecting it. “We want to explore and show all facets of Patagonia’s natural and cultural landscape, and at the same time help contribute to its long-term protection,” said Jimmy Langman, the magazine’s founder and executive editor.
Each issue will have high quality writing with abundant and beautiful photography on environmental, cultural, scientific and other topics. In addition, a travel section provides a close look at the best destinations and excursions in the region, and experts in Patagonia for fly fishing, trekking, and other topics are featured through regular departments.
The first issue includes contributions from journalists who write for publications such as Newsweek, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated, and the authors from leading North American travel guidebooks to Patagonia such as Lonely Planet and Frommer's.
The cover story for the inaugural issue by National Geographic writer Jack Miller is a dramatic tale illustrated with rare photos about an historic mountaineering expedition to the then unexplored Cordillera Sarmiento range off the coast of southern Chilean Patagonia. Other highlights in the first issue include an article about how climate change and melting glaciers threaten residents on the Baker River; an interview with nature philanthropist Douglas Tompkins; a feature story on the history of Torres del Paine National Park; and a travel article about whale watching off the Argentine Patagonia coast.
A quarterly magazine written in English and Spanish, the magazine is published on FSC-certified environmentally-sustainable paper as well as digital platforms such as the iPad.
